Tahiti and Bora Bora Travel Journal Day 2: Bora Bora St. Regis

Highlights of the Day

Day Two marked our arrival in Bora Bora, a volcanic island often called one of the most romantic destinations in the world. Although the flight from Papeete took only 50 minutes, the journey felt like half a day. Upon landing, resort staff welcomed us with fragrant flower leis, instantly creating a sense of ceremony and hospitality.

A boat transfer across the lagoon revealed Bora Bora’s legendary waters — layers of emerald green, crystal blue, and deep ocean hues blending like a living watercolor painting. The clarity of the shallow lagoon allowed us to see coral reefs and tropical fish beneath the surface.

At the St. Regis, our butler introduced us to the island’s facilities before we settled into vacation mode. Lunch featured coconut-marinated tuna and local specialties. By sunset, sitting quietly on the beach with Mount Otemanu in the distance, we felt fully immersed in Bora Bora’s serene beauty.

Accommodation: The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort

 Transportation: Walking

Bora Bora was formed by an extinct volcano and is a dazzling jewel in the South Pacific.

Although the flight from the main island of Papeete to Bora Bora takes only about 50 minutes, it took us nearly half a day from departure to arrival.

As soon as we stepped off the plane, we saw neatly arranged reception counters from the various resorts outside the small terminal. We quickly found the desk for the resort we had booked. A staff member in uniform greeted us with a warm smile and presented us with flower garlands and bracelets. Gently, she placed one garland around our necks and another around our wrists. The fragrance of fresh flowers filled the air, and the sense of ceremony was unmistakable. In that moment, we truly felt warmly welcomed.

Soon afterward, we boarded the resort’s transfer boat under the guidance of the staff. The boat glided slowly across the mirror-like sea, and we couldn’t help but marvel — we had never imagined the ocean could be this beautiful.

The water here is completely different from the usual deep blue we often see. Its colors form distinct layers: from the pale emerald green near the shore, to crystal blue in the middle, and finally to a deep ocean blue farther out. Each section looks like a watercolor painting created by nature, breathtakingly beautiful.

The water is so clear that you can see straight to the bottom, almost without any impurities. Coral formations and schools of colorful tropical fish are visible beneath the surface, appearing almost as if they were floating in midair.

This is because the lagoon here is shallow and exceptionally pure, with a seabed of white sand and coral reefs. Under sunlight, different water depths reflect different shades of color—bright emerald in the shallows, transparent blue in slightly deeper areas, and dark blue farther out. These gradual layers of color create a dreamlike palette across the sea.

No wonder Bora Bora is often called one of the most romantic islands in the world.

When the transfer boat reached the dock, our personal butler was already waiting for us. She drove us around the island in a small electric cart, introducing the surroundings along the way. The resort is well equipped, with several restaurants of different styles, a swimming pool area, as well as a spa and fitness center. Guests can go snorkeling or kayaking, or simply do nothing at all—just lie on the beach, soak up the sun, and listen to the sound of the waves. It felt like the next four days would be wonderfully full.

For lunch, we chose the seaside Aparima Restaurant. As usual, tuna was a must-order. We tried a local classic dish—tuna with coconut milk and lime. The fresh tuna soaked in coconut milk and citrus had a refreshing, delicate flavor. The burger was tender and juicy, and the exotic-style cheesecake was so delicious that we could hardly stop eating it. Our first meal on the island was a wonderful start.

In the afternoon, we fully settled into the rhythm of the resort. We wandered around the property, getting familiar with the surroundings.

The St. Regis sits on a small island surrounded by a crystal-clear lagoon, with Mount Otemanu rising in the distance. The scenery is so beautiful that it almost feels unreal.

We strolled along the wooden boardwalk as a gentle sea breeze brushed past us, and all the tension in our bodies melted away. The island is filled with lush greenery and blooming flowers—everywhere you look feels like a tropical painting.

In the evening, we sat on the beach watching the sunset. The surroundings were quiet and peaceful, and our minds gradually became calm as well. And so, in this relaxed and joyful atmosphere, we spent our first day in Bora Bora.
