Middle East Travel Journal Day 3: Dubai Palm Jumeirah
Highlights of the Day
Explored Dubai’s iconic Palm Jumeirah, from scenic coastal drives and beachfront dining at White Beach, to panoramic views from The View at The Palm. Rode the monorail across the palm-shaped island, admired the legendary Atlantis Hotel, and snapped skyline shots of Burj Al Arab and Dubai Frame. A perfect blend of engineering marvel, seaside relaxation, and city charm.
Palm Jumeirah is one of the largest man-made islands in the world, developed by Nakheel, a real estate company under the Dubai government. The island is shaped like a palm tree, featuring a trunk (the main road), 17 fronds (branches), and a crescent-shaped breakwater surrounding it. It is connected to mainland Dubai by two bridges and an underwater tunnel.
🚗 A Coastal Drive with City Views
The island boasts an incredibly long coastline. Driving along it offers sweeping views of both the island and the Dubai skyline in the distance. What’s more, there are plenty of free parking spots along the coast! At first, we were busy looking for pay stations—only to realize that everyone was just parking freely. So we relaxed, took photos, strolled by the water, and soaked in the sun and sea breeze.
📍 Atlantis The Palm
We parked near the iconic Atlantis The Palm, Dubai. This hotel is instantly recognizable with its signature archway and pink coral-colored façade, symbolizing a portal to the mythical underwater kingdom. Its architecture closely resembles that of Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas.
📷 Skyline Views and Hazy Charm
This stretch of coast is also one of the best places to view Dubai’s skyline, especially the iconic Burj Al Arab. Due to the air quality, though, all the photos came out with a bit of a hazy charm.
🌫️ Why So Hazy?
Whether it’s because of high humidity from the sea or dust from massive construction works, the sky here often feels hazy. It’s rare to see bright blue skies and fluffy white clouds.
🍴 A Mediterranean Lunch at White Beach
For lunch, we chose White Beach Restaurant, located at Atlantis The Palm. This open-air restaurant has a beautiful Mediterranean aesthetic, with white and natural wood tones, woven chairs, airy curtains, and touches of greenery. Dining here in the ocean breeze was a peaceful and romantic experience.
After lunch, we wanted to tour the hotel. I still remember being awed by their aquarium back in the Bahamas—it felt like a living extension of the sea. Naturally, I was curious to see if this one was similar, but unfortunately, only hotel guests are allowed in 😅.
🚝 Riding the Palm Monorail
Next, we boarded the Palm Jumeirah Monorail from its final stop—Atlantis Aquaventure Station. Within minutes, we arrived at the first station: Nakheel Mall.
🛍️ The View at The Palm
As mentioned, Nakheel is the developer of the entire island, and this mall sits right below the observation deck “The View at The Palm,” which offers an unbeatable bird’s-eye view of the island. Before taking the elevator up, we visited a small exhibition explaining the construction of Palm Jumeirah.
🌟 A Dream Realized Against All Odds
The idea for this ambitious project came from Dubai’s current ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Despite widespread skepticism and doubts, he famously declared, “Dubai doesn’t wait for opportunities. We create them.” After moving about 100 million cubic meters of sand and 7 million tons of rock, this ambitious vision became a luxurious reality.
🌊 Golden Leaves on the Water
Once we reached the observation deck, the entire island unfolded before us like a golden leaf floating on the sea—perfectly symmetrical, orderly, and magical. The neat fronds, turquoise waters, luxury hotels, and high-rise towers all formed a stunning contrast. From here, we could see both the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab and the Atlantis Hotel standing proudly along the central axis.
🚶♀️ A Peaceful Stop at The Pointe
Next, we got off at The Pointe Station. This area combines high-end residences and commercial spaces. We stopped at an open-air park where kids were playing on swings, parents chatted nearby—it was a scene of everyday calm and joy.
🚉 Gateway Station: The Final Stop
Our final stop was Gateway Station, the monorail’s starting point. It’s a transport hub of sorts, but we didn’t linger—just a quick look around before heading back.
🌿 Trunk vs. Fronds: Where We Explored
It’s worth noting that everything we explored today was on the “trunk” of the palm. The fronds—residential areas—are gated off, likely to protect the privacy of those living there.
✨ A Futuristic Dream in the Desert
Palm Jumeirah is not only an engineering marvel, but also a physical manifestation of Dubai’s futuristic dreams. And I’m just a lucky traveler passing through this grand vision.
🖼️ A Quick Glimpse of the Dubai Frame
Back in the city, we made a point to photograph another Dubai icon: the Dubai Frame. We didn’t have time to go inside, but snapping a shot from afar was still satisfying.
🚗 Faces in the Cityscape
Driving through the city, we noticed many high-rises adorned with portraits of past and present rulers—striking and memorable, so we took a few pictures as keepsakes.
🎉 Another Day, Another Discovery
And just like that, another colorful, enriching day in Dubai came to a close. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
