Highlights of the Day
Day 14 took us from Oman to Qatar by air, with strict baggage limits and a slow-moving airport experience. We had an amusing encounter with young date palms, saw unique Omani airport fashion, and experienced unusually high hotel security at Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel.
Logistics
Accommodation: Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel
Transportation: Rental Car
🛫 Cross-boarder Car Rental Challenge
Today, we flew to Doha, Qatar. It’s the largest city in the country and serves as its economic, political, and cultural center.
Our original plan was to rent a car in Dubai and return it in Doha, but we couldn’t find that option online. After arriving, we learned that the UAE and Qatar had severed diplomatic ties for years and only recently restored them. So, cross-border car rentals between the two countries aren’t possible at the moment. We had no choice but to fly from Oman to Qatar.
🎒 Strict Baggage Policy & Airport Woes
This airline had a very strict baggage policy: one 20kg checked bag and one 7kg carry-on per person—no additional personal items allowed. We packed carefully last night and again this morning, making good use of our portable luggage scale. Thankfully, we stayed within the weight limits.
The drive to the airport went smoothly, but returning the rental car wasn’t so easy. We followed GPS to the return location, where we found a row of offices—but the AVIS office was completely empty. Fortunately, someone in the neighboring office helped us call the Avis staff. It took quite a while for them to show up. The lack of service awareness was disappointing.
🌴 A Glimpse of Date Palms
We learned on this trip that the region’s famous dates grow on a specific type of palm tree. These trees look just like any other palm trees, but their fruits are sweet dates. We were hoping to see the dates growing, but unfortunately, it’s the wrong season—they usually start appearing around September or October. Still, we spotted some young sprouting stalks in a group of palm trees near the airport. Some of the branches were already starting to droop. Though tiny, we managed to capture them in photos—very amusing!
🛂 Slow-Motion Check-In at Muscat Airport
The check-in process at Muscat Airport was painfully slow. We only had 6–7 people ahead of us in line, but it still took more than 10 minutes. Then, the staff told us we were in the wrong line for flights to Doha and directed us to a new queue with over 20 people. That added another 20+ minutes of waiting.
🩴 Robes and Flip-Flops: Omani Airport Fashion
One fun observation: many men and women in Oman wear flip-flops—even at the airport—paired with traditional robes. It’s a look we saw again and again, and it really stood out.
☕ A Rare Lunch Break During Ramadan
Fortunately, we found a café open at the airport, selling croissants, bread, and drinks. It was such a relief to find a place that wasn’t restricted by Ramadan rules—finally a chance to enjoy a proper lunch in peace! 😀
🏨 An Unusual Check-In at Marriott Marquis, Doha
We chose to stay at the Marriott Marquis in Doha, and the check-in experience was quite unusual. First, porters took all of our luggage away upon arrival. Then, as we entered the hotel, we had to pass all our personal belongings through a security screening—something we’ve never experienced at a hotel before.
While checking in at the front desk, a staff member approached us, pointing to one of our bags and asking whose it was. I said it was mine. Another staff member showed us the scanner screen and said they’d detected a suspicious item. It turned out to be my electric kettle. She explained that it wasn’t allowed in guest rooms due to fire safety concerns. They would store it temporarily and return it when we checked out. We were honestly impressed by their level of security and attention to detail.
🌍 What’s Next?
Stay tuned for Day 15 as we visit the famous Museum of Islamic Art in Doha!
