Costa Rica Travel Journal Day 1: To La Fortuna

Highlights of the Day

After a five-hour flight from Newark, we arrived in San José, Costa Rica, greeted by warm tropical air. Renting a car from Avis proved slightly tricky, but we quickly sorted it out and hit the road. Navigating the chaotic city traffic was a challenge, requiring bold driving moves. We stopped at La Fiesta del Maíz for a local meal of flavorful grilled pork chops and rich beef soup before tackling winding mountain roads, which tested our focus and endurance. Arriving at our hotel by dinnertime, we enjoyed fresh ceviche and a peaceful, rainy evening on the balcony, looking forward to the adventures ahead.

Transportation: Rental Car

After a 5-hour flight from Newark, we arrived at Juan Santamaria International Airport in San José, Costa Rica, around noon. The warm tropical breeze greeted us, setting the tone for an exciting journey ahead.

Trusting familiar brands, we booked a car from Avis without hesitation. However, upon arrival at the airport, we discovered there was no Avis counter in sight. After consulting the staff, we learned that we needed to leave the terminal to find it. Outside, among the crowd, we spotted a young man holding an Avis sign. After confirming, we boarded their shuttle to the rental location. The process was straightforward. Apart from the legally required liability insurance, the staff accepted our credit card collision coverage and didn’t push for additional insurance.

Once on the road, it became clear why some colleagues had advised against self-driving, opting instead for local transport. The traffic was chaotic—crossroads without traffic lights and heavy congestion everywhere. Making a left turn required a bold, almost aggressive, maneuver; otherwise, it was impossible to move.

For lunch, we went to a locally recommended restaurant suggested by the car rental staff. We ordered grilled pork chops and beef soup. The grilled pork chops were perfectly cooked with a crispy exterior and tender interior, bursting with flavor. The beef soup, however, stole the show—its rich, savory broth and tender beef were absolutely delightful, offering a warm and authentic taste of the local cuisine.

After leaving the city, we faced a new challenge: winding mountain roads. Sharp curves and steep inclines came one after another, demanding complete focus. The drive was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating. Despite being a seasoned traveler, I found myself feeling carsick for the first time in years.

By the time we reached the hotel, it was already dinnertime, and rain was falling steadily outside. Fortunately, the hotel had its own restaurant, sparing us from venturing out. I ordered ceviche, a dish of lime-marinated sea bass, which was fresh and delicious. To my surprise, the actual bill was lower than the menu price. This curious discrepancy would happen several more times throughout our trip, but I always forgot to ask why.

Later, I returned to the room and stepped out onto the balcony. The gentle breeze and soothing rain seemed to wash away the day’s exhaustion. Standing there, I felt a sense of calm and anticipation for the adventures to come.
