Greece Travel Journal Day 6: Athens

Highlights of the Day

We had a late checkout before our afternoon flight to Athens, thanks to the kind hotel staff. We set out to find a seaside restaurant near the airport, but the first option suggested by Google Maps was closed. After another attempt, we found a restaurant by the beach with excellent food and service. When we paid, the server nervously asked if we wanted to leave a tip, which seemed to indicate that tipping isn’t a common practice in Greece but a newer concept.

Logistics

Accommodation: ATHENS MARRIOTT HOTEL (highly recommended)

Transportation: Public transportation or rideshare

Our flight to Athens was in the afternoon. The staff was very kind and offered us a late checkout since no one was scheduled to stay after us. We planned to find a seaside restaurant near the airport for lunch.

We followed Google Maps, but the restaurant was closed. We had already noticed that Google was often inaccurate on this island. Without it, we would have been completely lost. We tried another restaurant suggested by Google, and luckily, it was open. It was located right by the beach, with great views. The service and food were excellent.

When we paid the bill, the server nervously asked if we wanted to leave a tip. I noticed this is common in Greece, suggesting tipping isn’t a regular practice but a newer concept.
