Highlights of the Day
Day 6 was devoted almost entirely to transferring from Punta Arenas back to Santiago after the Antarctic expedition was cancelled. Passengers were first bused to the airport, then flown to Santiago on three separate flights, followed by another round of bus transfers to their hotels. The logistics were smooth, but the journey underscored the abrupt end of the expedition and the significant losses for the company.
That evening we checked into the Mandarin Oriental Santiago. Breakfast the next day was covered, while dinner was reimbursed up to $100 per person. We chose the hotel’s Asian restaurant, enjoying fresh sashimi, citrus-marinated salmon, and a seafood soup reminiscent of Thai tom yum, finishing with a creative wasabi ice cream. With a mix of appreciation and regret, our Antarctic journey quietly came to a close.
Accommodation: Mandarin Oriental Santiago
Transportation: Fully arranged by Silversea (coach transfers and charter/commercial flights)
Today we did essentially one thing: transfer from Punta Arenas back to Santiago. The company clearly suffered considerable losses during this disrupted expedition.
In the morning, several buses transported passengers to the airport. Three separate flights then carried us to Santiago. Upon arrival, several more buses transferred us to the hotel. By the time we checked in, it was already dinner time.
Our hotel tonight was the Mandarin Oriental Santiago. The company covered breakfast for the following morning, while dinner tonight was at our own expense, with a reimbursement allowance of up to $100 per person.
The dining environment at the hotel was excellent, and one of the restaurants served Asian cuisine. After many days away from familiar flavors, we gladly chose it.
The sashimi was extremely fresh. The citrus-marinated salmon was delicious, and the seafood soup carried the unmistakable flavors of Thai tom yum. For dessert, there was even a wasabi ice cream—an unexpected and creative surprise.
And so, our Antarctic journey, though unfinished and filled with regret, came to an end. Tomorrow, an entirely different world awaits ahead.
